Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. What the Board and State Law Actually Say
State certification from the Board has been mandatory to practice since August 29, 2020 (HB19-1242, signed June 3, 2019). Applicants must attest to a criminal history/background check (Rule 29.00.30(c)) and hold national certification in good standing. Certification requirements are in Rule 29 of the Board rules (3 CCR 719-1; current version effective 12/31/2025). Rule 29.00.30(b) accepts any certifying board or body approved by NABP or NCCA - PTCB (PTCE) and NHA (ExCPT) both hold NCCA accreditation. Training, Education, and Eligibility in Colorado
Training requirement
No state-mandated training program. Qualification for a (non-provisional) Board certification is proof of certification by a nationally recognized certification board or body, defined by Board Rule 29.00.30(b) as those approved by NABP or the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The certifying organization's own exam-eligibility rules therefore apply.

Starting Out: Trainee Status in Colorado
Provisional certification: the Board may issue a one-time provisional certification (same $57 fee per the Board's page) to an applicant who does not yet hold national certification; valid no more than 18 months and not renewable, with a one-time, fee-waived 9-month hardship extension available on written request at least 60 days before expiration (Rule 29.00.50).
