Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Illinois

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Illinois sits in the registration group: the board keeps the official technician roster, and getting on it is what makes you legal to work.

National certification is baked into the rules here: the board accepts the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and you cannot get credentialed without it. That makes exam prep part of the path — not an optional extra.

All pharmacy technician licenses issued after December 31, 2007 must add either the CERTIFIED or STUDENT designation by their second renewal per Section 9 of the Illinois Pharmacy Practice Act (225 ILCS 85/9) - so national certification effectively becomes mandatory for continuing technicians who are not student pharmacists (initial registration does not require certification, but keeping the license long-term does). IDFPR-approved certification exams are the NCCA-accredited PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE) and the NHA Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT). An applicant who has submitted a complete application and fee may assist a licensed pharmacist for up to 60 days before IDFPR issues the registration (a copy of the application must be kept on the premises). Technicians enrolled in a first professional pharmacy degree program at an approved school register under the Student designation as 'student pharmacists' instead of certifying.
