Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Indiana

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Indiana sits in the licensing group — the most restrictive model, where the Indiana Board of Pharmacy checks your eligibility before you can start work.

National certification is voluntary in Indiana, but not irrelevant: the board recognizes the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and many pharmacies prefer — or effectively require — certified technicians. A national credential also moves with you if you relocate to a stricter state.

Applicants younger than 18 may request a waiver by having the managing pharmacist of the employing pharmacy submit a supporting statement/letter. A criminal background check is required after the application is received. The PLA licensing page lists CE only for pharmacists (30 hours per renewal); no CE requirement for pharmacy technicians appears there, though the page does not say so outright - confirm with the PLA if you need certainty. PLA also advertises its Free Search & Verify at mylicense.in.gov/everification/Search.aspx; the secure.in.gov/apps/pla/search portal is the PLA License and Verification app and was live as of our last review.

Pharmacy Technician-in-Training permit available for applicants who have not yet completed a Board-approved training program or passed the PTCB/ExCPT exam; the permit is valid for one year and is nonrenewable. Applicants request it within the Pharmacy Technician application.
