Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Missouri

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Missouri sits in the registration group: the board keeps the official technician roster, and getting on it is what makes you legal to work.

Missouri asks for no national exam at all. Plenty of technicians here still earn certification voluntarily — a national credential strengthens job applications and moves with you if you relocate to a stricter state.

Governing law: Chapter 338 RSMo (esp. Section 338.013) and 20 CSR 2220 (esp. 20 CSR 2220-2.700 general technician requirements and 20 CSR 2220-2.715 authorized duties). The Board's 2025 Pharmacy Technician Informational Guide states certification is NOT required to register but is required for the expanded activities listed above; as of June 2025 PTCB and NHA (ExCPT) are the NCCA-accredited certifying entities. The Board's guide and application list no minimum age or education requirement for registration. The Board may place technicians on an Employment Disqualification List or issue conditional registrations under Section 338.013/338.055 RSMo. Applications are filed through the MOPRO portal (https://mopro.mo.gov/license/s/).

No separate trainee registration. An applicant may begin working before the registration certificate is issued once they have been fingerprinted by the Board's approved vendor, paid the fingerprint fee, and submitted a completed application with the application fee and fingerprint payment receipt; a copy of the application and fingerprint receipt must be kept at the pharmacy.
