How Oregon Regulates Pharmacy Technicians
Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. What the Board and State Law Actually Say
Oregon licenses two technician tiers under OAR chapter 855 division 125 (effective March 1, 2024, relocated from division 025): Pharmacy Technician (PT) and Certified Oregon Pharmacy Technician (COPT). Only COPT requires a national certification exam (PTCB or NHA/ExCPT), so certification is not mandated to work as a technician. Only licensed PTs/COPTs may assist a pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy, and only a COPT may use that title (OAR 855-125-0001). Applications require a passport-style photo, ID, fingerprint-based background check, and moral turpitude statement, filed through the Board's eGov portal; processing takes about 4-6 weeks. Statutory authority: ORS chapter 689.
