How Pennsylvania Regulates Pharmacy Technicians
Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Pennsylvania asks for no national exam at all. Plenty of technicians here still earn certification voluntarily — a national credential strengthens job applications and moves with you if you relocate to a stricter state.
What the Board and State Law Actually Say
Registration created by Act 140 of 2020 (amending the Pharmacy Act of 1961); implementing regulations (49 Pa. Code §§ 27.701-27.705) became effective June 28, 2025, and all pharmacy technicians must be registered with the Board by June 28, 2026 to practice. Requirements for full registration: at least 17 years old, high school diploma or equivalent, Board-approved training program, criminal history record check, and 3 hours of approved child abuse recognition and reporting training. A grandfathering pathway (49 Pa. Code § 27.705) is available for those with at least 1 year of technician practice between January 29, 2019 and January 29, 2021 (apply by June 28, 2026). No national certification exam is required. No CE-hour requirement for technician renewal is stated on the Board's requirements snapshot; the Board has not yet published renewal CE rules, so watch its site as renewals approach. Registration is filed through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS). Registered technicians assist in the practice of pharmacy under the direct and immediate personal supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
Training, Education, and Eligibility in Pennsylvania
Training requirement
Board-approved pharmacy technician training program required (49 Pa. Code § 27.702). Approved providers include pharmacy employers' own programs, ASHP/ACPE-accredited programs, programs recognized by PTCB or NHA, accredited educational institutions, U.S. Armed Forces training, and state-licensed private schools; programs must test competency in 14 defined areas. No exam is required for registration.
