Get hired first, then start the 30-day clock
You must be at least 16 and currently employed as a pharmacy technician in a licensed South Dakota pharmacy before you can apply, and you have 30 days from your employment hire date to obtain the registration. If you have ever held a South Dakota technician registration, use the renewal application instead - never the initial one.

Collect the details before you open the form
The application asks for your date of birth, Social Security number and education; your previous employer's name, full address, your job title there and the dates you were employed; the South Dakota license number of your employer's pharmacy; the name and license number of the pharmacist-in-charge; and your NABP e-profile number if you have one.

For any felony or misdemeanor offense, attach a signed and dated written explanation of the offense and its date plus copies of the court records showing charges and pleas entered.

Pay $25 by card and submit once
The $25 fee is nonrefundable for any reason, including duplicate and error submissions - which is why the board tells you not to click submit twice. Only Mastercard, Visa or American Express are accepted, including gift cards on those networks. You check the attestation box, type your name as an e-signature, and get a confirmation number.

Create your online account after the registration issues
The board reviews the application, emails you if it needs clarification, and sends an automated email on approval. Find the four-digit registration number assigned to you through the board's License Verification search, then use it with your date of birth to create an online account - that account is the only place you can print the registration itself and your payment receipt. A verification printout is not your official registration.

Email your certificate if you later pass an exam
The board does not certify technicians itself, but it does record the fact that you are. Email a copy of your official PTCB or ExCPT certificate to pharmacyboard@state.sd.us and the board changes your status from 'technician' to 'certified technician'. That matters from the 2026-27 renewal period, when renewal requires either six hours of continuing education or current national certification.

The board publishes no processing time. What it does publish is a deadline at the other end: you have 30 days from your hire date to obtain the registration, so the application wants to go in the week you start, not the week you get around to it.
