Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Virginia

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Virginia sits in the registration group: the board keeps the official technician roster, and getting on it is what makes you legal to work.

National certification is baked into the rules here: the board accepts the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and you cannot get credentialed without it. That makes exam prep part of the path — not an optional extra.

Registration requirements are set by Va. Code § 54.1-3321; the former regulation 18VAC110-21-140 was repealed effective July 3, 2025 (Virginia Register Vol. 41, Issue 20). The Board does not itself impose a minimum age or high school diploma requirement for technician registration in statute or current regulation, but exam vendors (PTCB/NHA) apply their own eligibility criteria. Pharmacy technician trainee registration ($20) is required before gaining practical pharmacy experience toward completing a training program. The trainee must be enrolled in a training program and directly monitored by a supervising pharmacist; the registration is assigned an expiration date not to exceed 2 years and becomes invalid if the trainee leaves or stops progressing in the program (18VAC110-21-135).
